A paper published in the October 1, 2015 edition of The Journal of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine confirms what many people have suspected all along: that hospitalization and mortality rates are much higher in for-profit nursing home facilities compared to their not-for-profit counterparts.
The study followed thousands of residents of nursing homes over more than a two year period. The conclusion? Residents who go to a nursing home operated by a for-profit corporation are much likelier to be hospitalized during their admission and even die during their nursing home admission than those individuals who are admitted to a not-for-profit nursing home facility for rehabilitation following a surgery or illness.
Florida residents should, when offered a choice of nursing homes, first inquire as to whether the facility is run by a for-profit corporation, and then request a facility which is operated as a not-for-profit. Remember to always visit the nursing home prior to the admission and use your senses to gain an idea as to the quality of care being delivered, the amount of staffing and the overall environment. Finally, if presented with any document that contains the word “Arbitration,” be sure to cross it out and do not sign the page. Arbitration is voluntary and should not be agreed to as it insulates the nursing home from liability in the event harm occurs. Your loved one will receive better care if no arbitration agreement is in place.
