How are our local nursing homes performing in 2015? I often receive calls from concerned citizens who are searching for a decent nursing home for the placement of a loved one. As a nursing home abuse lawyer who handles cases in Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda, Englewood, North Port and throughout much of Florida, I examine complaint and annual surveys of area nursing homes. If you are in the process of selecting a nursing home in Charlotte County, Sarasota County or Manatee County, Florida, you should be aware that the State of Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration regulates nursing homes and conducts annual surveys and complaint investigations. Those nursing homes with a pattern of problems are often placed on the state’s “Nursing Home Watch List.”
On June 1 through June 4, 2015, the State of Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration conducted an unannounced investigation at Signature Healthcare of Port Charlotte, which is located at 4033 Beaver Lane, Port Charlotte, Florida 33952. At that time, state investigators cited Signature Healthcare of Port Charlotte for failing to meet the guidelines set forth under the Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987 signed into law by President Ronald Reagan as well as state regulations. Those citations of deficiencies against Signature Healthcare of Port Charlotte included:
F253 – Failing to provide housekeeping and maintenance services necessary to maintain a sanitary, orderly and comfortable interior.
F441 – Failing to establish and maintain an Infection Control Program designed to provide a safe, sanitary and comfortable environment and to help prevent the development and transmission of disease and infection.
N 054 Failing to follow physician’s orders for residents.
N 111 Failing to ensure that residents’ wheelchairs were clean and in good repair.
