Uninsured / Underinsured (UM) insurance coverage – What is it and why is it important? UM coverage is not manadatory, and many drivers neglect to obtain it for that reason.   It may, however, be one of the most important types of coverage to have in the event you are seriously injured in a collision.  As the name implies, UM coverage is available to you 1) in the event the driver who hits you has no bodily injury coverage, or 2) in the event the driver who hits you maintains minimal or inadequate coverage to fully compensate you for your damages.  Since bodily injury coverage is optional coverage for most drivers in Florida, a very large percentage of motorists on our highways maintain no bodily injury coverage whatsoever.  Many drivers who do have bodily injury coverage on their policies maintain a mere nominal amount – $10,000.00 in coverage.  This amount is quickly exhausted in the event you are in a serious auto accident.  Therefore, the best way to protect yourself and guard against the possibility of being in an accident and not getting all of your medical bills paid is to purchase as much UM coverage as you can afford.  Florida law allows you to buy UM coverage equal to the limits of bodily injury coverage that you maintain on your insurance policy.  In other words, if you have $100,000.00 in bodily injury coverage, you may purchase up to $100,000.00 in UM coverage.
